Philodendron hederaceum ‘Micans’ is a much-loved cultivar of the classic Heartleaf Philodendron, admired for its luxurious velvety leaves and elegant trailing growth. Native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, it belongs to the Araceae family and has become a favourite among plant collectors and interior designers for its texture, colour, and versatility.
The plant’s heart-shaped leaves are its defining feature. Young leaves emerge with a bronzy, coppery tone, gradually maturing into deep green with subtle purple undertones. The surface has a fine velvety sheen that shimmers under the light, creating a soft, almost iridescent effect. The undersides of the leaves are typically burgundy, adding extra depth and richness to the overall look.
Philodendron ‘Micans’ is an adaptable vining plant. It can be grown trailing gracefully from shelves or hanging baskets, or trained to climb a moss pole or trellis, where its leaves may grow larger and more dramatic. Its romantic foliage and ease of care make it a plant that bridges both beginner-friendly and collector-worthy appeal.
Philodendron hederaceum ‘Micans’ – Care Guide
Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light. Tolerates medium and lower light, though leaves may become smaller and less colourful. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which can burn the velvety foliage.
Watering
Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil lightly moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering may cause root rot, while underwatering may lead to wilting and crisp leaves. In winter, reduce watering slightly.
Temperature and Humidity
-
Temperature: Ideal range is 18–26°C. Avoid prolonged exposure below 15°C.
-
Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity (50%+). In dry homes, mist occasionally, use a pebble tray, or place near a humidifier to prevent crispy tips.
Soil and Potting
Use a chunky, free-draining aroid mix such as peat-free compost blended with perlite, orchid bark, and coco coir. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the soil and provide more space for growth.
Feeding
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4 weeks in spring and summer. Feeding is unnecessary in autumn and winter.
Pruning and Training
Prune long stems to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. The plant can be trained up a moss pole, producing larger leaves, or allowed to trail naturally. Stem cuttings propagate readily in water, soil, or sphagnum moss.
Growth and Maturity
A moderately fast-growing philodendron, producing vines that can reach several metres with age. When given vertical support, it can mature into a more robust specimen with larger leaves.
Common Issues
-
Yellowing leaves: Often caused by overwatering or poor drainage.
-
Leggy stems: A sign of insufficient light.
-
Crispy leaf edges: Typically due to low humidity.
-
Pests: Occasionally susceptible to spider mites, mealybugs, or thrips.
Background and Benefits
Micans has earned a reputation as one of the most beautiful philodendrons due to its velvety leaves and rich tones. It brings softness and depth to plant displays and is as easy to care for as it is beautiful. Like other philodendrons, it also contributes to better indoor air quality by filtering toxins from the air.
